Umlazi Pupils Celebrate Maths and Science

Pupils at Umlazi’s Ogwini Comprehensive High School rounded off the week with fun and learning recently, when East Coast Radio broadcast live from the school between 6am and 9am. Darren Maule and the East Coast Breakfast team, including Sky Tshabalala and Keri Miller, teamed up with MAHLE and the NGO, Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME) to promote science and mathematics among pupils.

The idea was to make learning science and maths fun and encourage more pupils to take an interest in these subjects so they can pursue them in tertiary institutions after they complete matric. And boy, did they have fun! Local science and maths ambassador, rap artist EWOK, entertained the pupils, the #Science2Go dancers got everyone moving, the CASME team got pupils thinking on their feet with their live experiments and Darren, Sky and Keri took hundreds of selfies with the children.

Cheered on by his friends and teachers, Grade 11 pupil, Mike Thamsanqa Manci, nailed all 10 science and maths questions in The Grand Challenge and couldn’t contain his excitement when he won R5 000 for his efforts!

The sky may have been grey over Durban but three hours of fun and learning definitely raised temperatures at Ogwini Comprehensive Technical High!
